On behalf of the Clairemont Town Council, we would like congratulate some of our elected officials on a few significant milestones that were achieved recently.
First, we want to congratulate District 2 City Councilman Kevin Faulconer on his election last month to be our city's 37th Mayor. The significance of this milestone is that Mayor-Elect Faulconer has become the first person who has represented Clairemont to be elected Mayor of San Diego.
Second, we want to congratulate Assemblywoman Toni Atkins who has been elected Speaker of the California State Assembly. Speaker-Elect Atkins represents parts of South Clairemont and Bay Park in the 78th Assembly District, and becomes the first legislator in our state's history from San Diego to wield the powerful Speaker's gavel.
Finally, we want to offer a special congratulations to our Interim Mayor (iMayor) Todd Gloria. Through some crazy times at City Hall, Todd Gloria came in and helped our city heal and moved us forward with the dignity and professionalism that we needed at this time. Todd graduated from our own James Madison High School and became the first Clairemont graduate to become Mayor of San Diego. Thank you, Todd!
The 2014 Garden Tour is fast-approaching! We have been floored by the number of folks who have submitted gardens this year, so we are going to have plenty of great choices. We are still soliciting sponsors to help offset the cost of this year's tour, and -- of course -- volunteers will be needed for day-of activities.
Much of what we raise through this annual event helps the Town Council fund community grants that we award twice a year. If you would like to showcase your garden, help sponsor the tour, and/or volunteer, please e-mail Ingrid Terpening, our Garden Tour Chair, at GardenTour@ClairemontOnline. com
Speaking of community grants, if you know of an organization, or a community project, that could benefit from some extra help from the Town Council, please don't hesitate to apply for our community grants. You can find an application on our website at ClairemontOnline.com/Grants. Application guidelines and more information about our grants are also listed on that page.
Also, we love to encourage participation in our Town Council committees. Given that we our a volunteer-operated organization, the more people we have involved the more we can accomplish for our Clairemont community. Strength in numbers, right? Some of our committees needing some additional help include: Communications, Events, Garden Tour, and Public Safety Awareness. Any Clairemont resident may be eligible to serve on any of our committees, so if you're interested in participating, sign-up at ClairemontOnline.com/ Committees.
Our next Clairemont Town Council meeting will be held on Thursday, March 6th at 7:00pm inside the Cadman Elementary cafeteria (4370 Kamloop Avenue, San Diego, CA 92117). County Treasurer Tax-Collector Dan McAllister will be our guest speaker, and our Public Safety Awareness Committee continues their informational presentations, this month focusing on drunk driving.
Working for you, Clairemont!
