President's Letter: October 2016
It's October, and with our kids trick-or-treating soon it might be useful to partake in some neighborhood safety measures.
CTC Sergeant-at-Arms Steph Groce is organizing Stay SAFE (Self and Family Expo) event on Saturday, October 22nd, from 2pm to 5pm at the North Clairemont Park & Rec Center. For more information, email publicsafety@clairemontonline.com
October also means we are getting into the home stretch of this year's election season.

October also means we are getting into the home stretch of this year's election season.
With dozens of state and local propositions on the ballot, Voice of San Diego has you covered. Here's their guide to state propositions, and here's their guide to all the local propositions.
Also, you'll likely want to make sure your voter registration is up-to-date before you head to the polls. Check to make sure your registration status is correct at the San Diego County Registrar of Voters website, and if you need to update or change any information, you can register to vote online.
Some dates to keep in mind:
Oct 10: First day Vote-by-Mail ballots are available (you can also vote early then, too)
Oct 24: Last day to register to vote in this election
Nov 1: Last day to submit written request for vote-by-mail ballot
Nov 8: Election Day

President's Letter: October 2015
The Clairemont Farmers Market at Madison High School has been going strong, and growing, since its' inception back in May.
Recently, they've moved from the dirt lot to the paved area on the NE corner on campus -- near intersection of Kesling Street and Mt. Abernathy. Remember, the Farmers Market hours are now 9am - 1pm and are every Saturday.
Our next meeting is Thursday, October 1 at 6:30pm inside Cadman Elementary. State Senator Marty Block will be joining us to update on state issues, and we'll also hear from City Councilwoman Lorie Zapf.
We will also vote to approve some updated sections to our Bylaws, and those proposals can be found on our website: ClairemontOnline.com

Great California ShakeOut, October 16
October 16 (10/16) at 10:16 AM is the 2014 Great California ShakeOut. Join millions of other Californians in this drill to “Drop, Cover and Hold On.” Drop to the floor, take cover under a sturdy desk or table, and hold on to it firmly. Be prepared to move with it until the shaking stops. Not everyone is near a table or desk when the earth shakes, so here is some information for other places:
- If you are not near a desk or table, drop to the floor against the interior wall and protect your head and neck with your arms. Avoid exterior walls, windows, hanging objects, mirrors, tall furniture, large appliances, and kitchen cabinets with heavy objects or glass. Do not go outside!
- If you are in bed, hold on and stay there, protecting your head with a pillow. You are less likely to be injured staying where you are. Broken glass on the floor has caused injury to those who have rolled to the floor or tried to get to doorways.
- If you are driving, pull over to the side of the road, stop, and set the parking brake. Avoid overpasses, bridges, power lines, signs and other hazards. Stay inside the vehicle until the shaking is over. If a power line falls on the car, stay inside until a trained person removes the wire.
- If you are in a theater or at a stadium stay at your seat and protect your head and neck with your arms. Don't try to leave until the shaking is over. Then walk out slowly watching for anything that could fall in the aftershocks.

President's Letter: October 2014
However, we kick this festive month off with a candidate forum on Thursday, October 2nd at 6:30pm for San Diego City Council District 6. The forum will be held at Cadman Elementary, and will be moderated by Janet Poutre, Publisher/Editor of the Clairemont Community News.
Candidates Carol Kim and Chris Cate have been invited.
Whoever wins this seat will take over from current councilwoman Lorie Zapf -- who has been elected to the District 2 seat -- and all will be sworn in before the end of the year in December.
We hope to invite whoever wins in District 6, along with Lorie Zapf, to a future Town Council meeting next year to discuss community issues in Clairemont.

Clairemont Act One Presents: "Crimes of the Heart"
Here’s a trivia question for Clairemont residents: What does
Clairemont have now that it didn’t have three years ago? Answer: A community theatre company! Clairemont
Act One Community Theatre was founded in 2011 by Katie Turner, who simply put a
notice in the Clairemont Community News
asking for anyone interested in community theatre to drop her a line. A meeting of those responding was held, and
Clairemont Act One was born.
The first production opened in time for Halloween 2011, and was an evening of dramatic readings of scary stories. This was followed in December with a radio show production of A Christmas Carol. Soon after, CAO grew to producing full length plays, beginning with Steel Magnolias in the spring of 2012, and followed several months later with Neil Simon’s California Suite. They have also performed an original, full length play, Clued In, written by two of Clairemont Act One’s very own members. In addition, they’ve produced an evening of One Act plays and two fundraiser variety shows CAO is currently hard at work on their ninth production , Crimes of the Heart by Beth Henley, which opens their fourth season on October 17th.

In-Home Fire Safety Tips
As the fire
season is already underway, the Clairemont Town Council’s Public
Safety Awareness Committee would like to remind you of the following
fire prevention and safety preparedness steps. Although there are
extensive resources relating to fire prevention, our goal is to
highlight several focus points for our neighborhoods.

- Furnace,
Kerosene Heaters, Wood Stoves, and Fireplaces should be inspected
for damage, safety control triggers, emergency shutoffs, and
thermostats are operational.
- It is not
recommended to use any type of flammable liquid or flame accelerator
to start an indoor fire.
- Carbon
Monoxide and Smoke Detectors are operational.
- Develop an
Emergency plan and Fire Escape Plan and practice it. Be sure to
establish two central meeting places one should be near the home and
two should be a few blocks away at a park, building or business.
- Establish a
central communication point such as an out of the area relative.
This assists in the event family members are separated.
- Maintain a 30ft minimum distance defensible space around your home by reducing vegetation and tree build up.
- Get an ABC rated fire extinguisher.
Remember
the word PASS when using a fire extinguisher:
P
– Pull the pin and hold the extinguisher with the nozzle pointing
away from you.
A
– Aim low. Point the extinguisher at the base of the fire.
S
– Squeeze the lever slowly and evenly.
S
– Sweep the nozzle from side to side.
- Do not block exits.

Last month's meeting with Interim Mayor Todd Gloria, I feel, was one of the best Clairemont Town Council meetings we've ever had with nearly 200 in attendance -- a sentiment shared by several longtime CTC members and attendees. Thank you to everyone who showed up and to our CTC Board for helping to organize such an amazing turnout!
For our October 3rd meeting, nominations will close for our Board elections, and we will welcome two amazing guest speakers: Cindy Marten, the recently appointed Superintendent for San Diego Unified, and Javier Mainar, our Fire Chief for the City of San Diego.
