Don’t Mistake a Thief for Santa Clause

The Clairemont Town Council’s Public Safety Awareness Committee in conjunction with San Diego Police Department Northern Division would like to remind you to review the following safety concerns.

Northern Division has increased the number of officers and patrols in the following areas:

• UTC Mall, Balboa Mesa and Clairemont Square shopping Centers, and traffic patrol of high travel streets.

Another successful year under our belts!  

Please come out this Thursday, December 4 at 6:30pm and join us for our annual Potluck Dinner as we formally celebrate our 60th anniversary. Our annual feast will be held inside the Cadman Elementary cafeteria, and dinner will be catered by Keil's. Everyone is welcome to bring a side dish or dessert to share.

We will also be presenting several awards including:

• Beautification Award
• Board of Directors' Award
• Business of the Year
• Community Volunteer of the Year 
• Elected Official of the Year
• Elected Official Staffer of the Year
• Non-Profit/Organization of the Year, and
• Youth Volunteer of the Year

With all the other elections going on, we do have our Clairemont Town Council Board of Directors elections coming up at our next meeting this Thursday, November 6th at 6:30pm inside the Cadman Elementary cafeteria.

The positions up for election this year are: Treasurer, Sergeant-at-Arms, Director West, Director East, Director Central, and Director-at-Large Seats A, B, and C. If no candidates have declared for any of the positions they will not appear on the Town Council ballot.

At our upcoming meeting this Thursday, we will welcome the SDPD HOT (Homeless Outreach) Team. They will present facts and figures about our homeless population and how our officers are handling the situation. Also, SDG&E will present on their Pipeline Safety Enhancement Plan, and we will also hear about an upcoming sewer and water main replacement project.

Also, wanted to highlight the Great California Shakeout...

Great California ShakeOut, October 16

October 16 (10/16) at 10:16 AM is the 2014 Great California ShakeOut.  Join millions of other Californians in this drill to “Drop, Cover and Hold On.”  Drop to the floor, take cover under a sturdy desk or table, and hold on to it firmly. Be prepared to move with it until the shaking stops.  Not everyone is near a table or desk when the earth shakes, so here is some information for other places:

• If you are not near a desk or table, drop to the floor against the interior wall and protect your head and neck with your arms. Avoid exterior walls, windows, hanging objects, mirrors, tall furniture, large appliances, and kitchen cabinets with heavy objects or glass. Do not go outside!
  
• If you are in bed, hold on and stay there, protecting your head with a pillow. You are less likely to be injured staying where you are. Broken glass on the floor has caused injury to those who have rolled to the floor or tried to get to doorways.
  
• If you are driving, pull over to the side of the road, stop, and set the parking brake. Avoid overpasses, bridges, power lines, signs and other hazards. Stay inside the vehicle until the shaking is over. If a power line falls on the car, stay inside until a trained person removes the wire.
  
• If you are in a theater or at a stadium stay at your seat and protect your head and neck with your arms. Don't try to leave until the shaking is over. Then walk out slowly watching for anything that could fall in the aftershocks.

President's Letter: October 2014

Clairemont Town Council will be rockin' it with enough activities this October that we've dubbed it "Rocktober." Alright -- not really. That word could be copyrighted, so we'll leave it alone for now. 

However, we kick this festive month off with a candidate forum on Thursday, October 2nd at 6:30pm for San Diego City Council District 6. The forum will be held at Cadman Elementary, and will be moderated by Janet Poutre, Publisher/Editor of the Clairemont Community News.

Candidates Carol Kim and Chris Cate have been invited.

Whoever wins this seat will take over from current councilwoman Lorie Zapf -- who has been elected to the District 2 seat -- and all will be sworn in before the end of the year in December.

We hope to invite whoever wins in District 6, along with Lorie Zapf, to a future Town Council meeting next year to discuss community issues in Clairemont.

Clairemont Act One Presents: "Crimes of the Heart"

Here’s a trivia question for Clairemont residents: What does Clairemont have now that it didn’t have three years ago?  Answer: A community theatre company! Clairemont Act One Community Theatre was founded in 2011 by Katie Turner, who simply put a notice in the Clairemont Community News asking for anyone interested in community theatre to drop her a line.  A meeting of those responding was held, and Clairemont Act One was born.

The first production opened in time for Halloween 2011, and was an evening of dramatic readings of scary stories.  This was followed in December with a radio show production of A Christmas Carol.  Soon after, CAO grew to producing full length plays, beginning with Steel Magnolias in the spring of 2012, and followed several months later with Neil Simon’s California Suite.  They have also performed an original, full length play, Clued In, written by two of Clairemont Act One’s very own members. In addition, they’ve produced an evening of One Act plays and two fundraiser variety shows  CAO is currently hard at work on their ninth production , Crimes of the Heart by Beth Henley, which opens their fourth season on October 17^th.

Submit Questions for the District 6 Candidate Forum

Clairemont Town Council and the Clairemont Chamber of Commerce will co-host a candidate forum for the District 6 seat on San Diego City Council.

The candidate forum will take place on Thursday, October 2nd, 2014 at 7:00pm, and will be held inside Cadman Elementary (4370 Kamloop Ave., San Diego, CA 92117).

Nomination time is open for offices on the Clairemont Town Council Board of Directors!

Have you wanted to be more involved in Clairemont Town Council? Now is the time to nominate yourself, or an interested neighbor, for offices on the Clairemont Town Council.

Nominations shall be accepted until the end of our October General Meeting on Thursday, October 2, 2014.

The following offices, and those declared candidates thus far, shall be considered for election at our November General Meeting on Thursday, November 6, 2014:

This month, Clairemont Town Council proudly turns 60.

Since 1954, Clairemont Town Council has been the voice of our Clairemont community to help support our schools, businesses, community improvement projects, and other issues that have helped shape the character of our community.

All month long, we are excited to celebrate our legacy with Chili's at Clairemont Town Square -- who is donating 15% of event day sales back to our organization, to help support our community grants. In order for this to work, please present this flyer to your server and let them know you're there for Clairemont Town Council.

The Habit Burger Grill Opens in Clairemont Mesa

 Three Fundraisers will benefit Mission Valley YMCA/Krause Family

Skate Park, MDA and Friends of the Balboa Public Library

 

            (Irvine, CA – August 5, 2014) - Habit Restaurants, LLC, an Irvine-based restaurant company, will open a Habit Burger Grill at 4175 Genesee Avenue in San Diego on Wednesday, August 13, 2014. The newest location brings the number of Habit restaurants to 96. The Habit was recently rated in the Burger category in a Consumer Reports national survey (click here).
 

             The public may get a sneak peek of the tasty menu during fundraisers on Sunday and Tuesday, August 10 and 12, when The Habit will donate 100 percent of all proceeds to three non-profits. On Sunday, August 10, The Habit will open for lunch (11:30-1:30) benefiting the Mission Valley YMCA/Krause Family Skate Park; dinner that evening (5-7 PM) will aid Muscular Dystrophy Association, San Diego and Imperial Counties. For Tuesday lunch, August 12 (11:30-1:30), Friends of the Balboa Public Library will be the beneficiary. The restaurant will open for business officially on Wednesday, August 13 at 10:30 AM.  It is the sixth Habit location in greater San Diego.

President's Letter: August 2014

At last month's Clairemont Town Council meeting, we approved a recommendation to start our Board and General monthly meetings at 6:30pm.

Our colleagues at the Clairemont Planning Board have been meeting at 6:30pm for years, so we felt it was appropriate to start our meetings at the same time. This hopefully will create some uniformity between the Town Council and the Planning Board.

Last month, we discussed the importance of voting and the abysmal turnout in the June Primary Election. Clairemont, as we've learned, turns out to vote at higher percentages than other communities throughout our region.

However, the election process does not stop when you turn in your ballot!
