Student Rep. Jesus Martinez celebrates her graduation from Clairemont High School

Congratulations to Jesus Martinez on her graduation!

In 2011, the Clairemont Town Council established the role of Student Representative as a way to help foster civic engagement among Clairemont's youth. It was an opportunity for CTC to help develop their leadership skills and help connect them with the many community and elected leaders who visit our meetings during any given month.

As a newer (and younger) member of the Town Council's Board five years ago, this was one of the first things I helped push.

Jesus Martinez was not our first Student Representative, but she has certainly had the most impact -- not only for Clairemont Town Council -- but hear leadership skills at Clairemont High School and throughout our community.

Summer Movies in the Park: Big Hero 6

Our next Summer Movies in the Park will be Saturday, July 25th at Cadman Community Park (4280 Avati Drive) at 7:00pm.

We'll be screening Disney's Academy Award-winning animated film "Big Hero 6" (Rated PG).

Since it's a superhero movie, we're encouraging everyone to wear something heroic. We'll have a costume contest for kids as well, so come on out for family-friendly entertainment, games, and prizes!

We are headstrong into the summer season! Our first Movies in the Park was successful, and we want to give a shout out to Jesus Martinez, our Clairemont Town Council Student Representative, for organizing these events and taking them on.

The next Movies in the Park will be Saturday, July 25th at Cadman Community Park at 7:00pm. We'll be screening last year's Academy-Award winning animated film "Big Hero 6" (Rated PG). Since it's a superhero movie, we're encouraging everyone to wear something heroic. We'll have a costume contest for kids as well, so come on out for family-friendly entertainment, games, and prizes!

  

Lots have been said about traffic -- specifically, speed demons -- along Moraga Ave. The Board will be hearing and discussing a recent proposal to install traffic circles on Moraga, and we will update you on this at our next Clairemont Town Council meeting on Thursday, July 9th.

With the upcoming holiday, there's no Town Council meeting this week. We will be back next Thursday, July 9!

We just went through one cycle of elections, but it's not over yet!

For the June 3rd Primary, voter turnout was just absolutely abysmal across the board. Statewide, 25% of voters turned out to vote. Countywide, it was marginally higher at 27%. Imagine that. One out of every four voters showed up.

Clairemont, at least, votes. As usual, we had one of the higher turnouts of any community in San Diego. Maybe we just love exercising our right to vote, or maybe we're just one of the few communities that is educated enough to care. Who knows? Perhaps we should have a Clairemont-wide discussion on this issue. We would love to hear your thoughts!

Moving forward, however, Clairemont will be home to two major political races this November. The only San Diego City Council election still being contested is the race in District 6, which includes much of Clairemont east of Tecolote Canyon, as well as Kearny Mesa, Mira Mesa, Sorrento Valley, and parts of Rancho Peñasquitos. Also, our Congressional election this year is considered such a toss-up, that national pundits are calling it one of the top 10 elections nationwide.

So, brace yourself! There's more mail, ads, jockeying, lies, half-truths, rumors, and flyers left to be seen. Also, if campaigns come by and put signs on your property without your permission, you have a right to take them down. This happened several times during this last election to a few of our neighbors. Be smart. Don't let them fool you!

First off, shout out to Papa's Pizza on Moraga Ave for providing us pizza for the meeting!

Our County Treasurer-Tax Collector Dan McAllister provided a very good presentation on the reforms his office has done to make the tax office more user (and taxpayer) friendly. Mr. McAllister even commented on the turnout, which -- mind you -- was phenomenal, considering it wasn't held on our usual meeting day. He said were one the most active and well-attended community councils in the city, which is a testament to the hard work of our Board, and all of our community members' interests in the well-being of Clairemont.

In my last President's letter I laid out a few items of interest that the Town Council is looking for, and we went into further discussion at our meeting. We're encouraging our CTC members to be active in any of our committees. Our list of committees can be found here: ClairemontOnline.com/Committees


We are encouraging anyone in the community with expertise in event planning (or knows someone with those qualities) to help the Board organize some exciting events for next year. We are looking to get started on organizing for our 2014 Garden Tour, our 60th Anniversary Dinner, and any other events we feel would help benefit the mission of our Council and our community. Our Historian, Simone Henriques, is continuing to compile information about our community legacy, and can always use some volunteer help. If you're interested, please contact Simone at Contact@ClairemontOnline.com

CTC elections are coming up in November, and we need a capable Nominating and Elections Committee to help our Secretary, C.J. Shedlock, conduct an awesome election. If you're interested in serving on this committee, please e-mail Elections@ClairemontOnline.com

For our Public Safety Committee, we sought feedback on some particular issues that we can help address and we can always hear more concerns that can be brought to the committee's attention. Finally, we have a comprehensive set of Bylaw Amendments that the Board is soliciting input on, so that we may have the Council formally adopt at our next meeting. We've compiled all of the possible changes of the Bylaw amendments here. For comparison, our current set of Bylaws can be found on our website here.

We're just working to help build a bigger, stronger Town Council. We always appreciate your thoughts and ideas.

Bulletin: Proposed Pool at Hickman Field

FYI... There is a community meeting tomorrow (July 10) about putting a pool at Hickman Field. For more information about the meeting: click here.

There have been conflicting letters of support and opposition on this project, and city leaders have only heard from a handful of people. Clairemont Town Council has not taken any position on this, so we need to hear from you -- the community!

If you could please send an e-mail in either support or opposition to the pool, or better yet -- attend the meeting, it would be greatly appreciated.
