President's Letter: January 2015

It's January -- and, before we get into the really good news -- that means is time to renew your Town Council memberships for the year! Please be sure to renew online at ClairemontOnline.com/Join.

Over the Holidays, we heard that Haggen Foods will take over the Albertsons store on Balboa Ave. No -- it's not shutting down -- just changing hands.

Haggen Foods, based in Bellingham, Wash., is said to be a cross between Vons and Whole Foods. So, while it's not specifically a Trader Joe's, we can be thankful that our community is moving on up in the world!

We are certainly excited about the change, and welcome Haggen Foods as a new business, and Clairemont community partner. For information about Haggen Foods, please check out their website: Haggen.com.

This Thursday, January 8th at 6:30pm we will commence our annual Inaugural Meeting of the Clairemont Town Council where our newly elected and re-elected members of the Board will be sworn-in. Our two city councilmembers, Lorie Zapf and Chris Cate, will administer the oath of office. Councilmembers Zapf and Cate will also be our guest speakers that evening.
Also, we will hear from Jim Flores, President and CEO of the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank. In honor of the new year and in welcoming Jim to our meeting, we would like to encourage everyone to help bring non-perishable canned goods to the meeting as a donation to the San Diego Food Bank.

No better way to start of the new year, than by doing our part to help others. So, please consider bringing something to help those families and neighbors in need.

Moving forward into the year, we are looking to organize the 2015 Garden Tour Committee. We are still in need of a chair (or co-chairs) to help lead this effort. The time and effort of previous Garden Tour Committees has been incredibly stellar, and --  since this is our biggest fundraiser of the year -- we need some helping hands to launch this effort.

This is scheduled to be our upcoming 19th annual tour, however, unless we are able to organize an interested committee for the Garden Tour then we may have to focus our attention and energy on other events later this year. If you're interested in helping us continue the Garden Tour this year, then please email us at Board@ClairemontOnline.com.

Due to our Board elections in November, we have new vacancies for Director West, and three Director-at-Large positions. If you're interested in serving on our Board, please e-mail us at Board@ClairemontOnline.com. We will be conducting candidate interviews at our next regularly scheduled Board meeting on Thursday, January 29th at 6:30pm inside the Cadman Elementary Library.

Working for you, Clairemont!

CTC President

  1. This is really encouraging news for Clairemont. I am also hopeful we can eventually attract a non-chain, real food restaurant with minimally processed dishes such as you can find at Tender Greens or Urban Plates.
